This place is wonderful this time of year. Tons of Seagulls and different species of Cranes and other birds stop here as they are migrating south for the winter. National Geographic was out there a few weeks ago filming a special about them.
There is another pond on the other side that is great for fishing. Every few minutes, literally you'll see a huge fish splash out of the water. I've never seen such a thing. We caught several good sized catfish. Nice relaxing place to enjoy. The only downfall is that there is no shade. So be prepared.

It is located on east shore of the Illinois River. Driving road is possible to find birds. However, take side roads and find abundance of ducks and geese

Drove 3 1/2 hours to what we thought was one of the best bass lakes in the state
Haven't been there in some time, what ever they did to introduce the river completely trashed this place. Place is full of Asian carp, gars and catfish. Very disappointing trip.....won't be back

The Emiquon NWR has been a long time place of serenity for many people, native and migrant to Central Illinois, the State of Illinois,or even to the United States. I recently visited while on a trip out of town for work.
It's the end of February, so there were plenty of varieties of wild fowl; Canada Geese, Snow Geese, Mallards, and even raptor species like the beautiful bird of America, The Bald Eagle!

I'll return more this year. I hope you get the chance throughout the year to see the changes in water level, migrations, and even get in some fishing at local nearby lakes, ponds and marshes!
