***BEWARE*** So...We moved into a "luxury" apartment in Ohio City and there were problems from day one. At first, it was just minor things. Shotty craftsmanship, they hadn't cleaned up before we moved in, etc., things we could get past. Then it rained... This was a two-bedroom apartment. One of the bedrooms was in the basement. We hadn't even unpacked the basement room yet when we saw it... Mold. Not only that, the carpet was soaked underneath our brand-new mattress that was sitting on it. Side note: as we were moving in, the neighbor said he'd heard "they had leaking issues." This was as we were moving in... Great. Anyway, we called the property management office (the women in the office are great btw) and they seemed very concerned. After a lot of back and forth, they put us up in an air bnb and had the drywall and insulation removed and replaced, and the carpets cleaned. We moved back in. The replaced drywall and baseboards were put back haphazardly, but again, we could deal with that. Then it rained... Flooding on the first floor, and flooding in the basement (we still hadn't unpacked the "second bedroom" in the basement, thank God). Again, we called and gave them an opportunity to fix the issue (at this point, we'd only lived there for a few weeks). It took them forever to send someone out to get a quote to fix the issues, which they said they fixed before. They didn't. They claimed it took a long time because of the bad storm and they couldn't get anyone to come out. Whatever, the point is, they didn't address the issues (there were more than these) and we knew there was mold sitting in the floors and in the walls. We waited and waited. Phone calls and emails were not returned. When they were returned, they didn't address the issues we brought to their attention. Finally, we ended up talking to a lawyer who advised us to put our rent into escrow until the issues were fully addressed and eradicated. These included fixing the source of the problem, full mold remediation, replacement of the drywall and insulation, and then full clean-up. Apparently, this was just too much to ask. It never happened. We got frustrated and moved out. We lived there for a total of 2 and a half months. We never got to unpack, and we had to stay elsewhere for part of that time.
They did let us out of our lease, which, let's be honest, was the least they could do. They gave us a partial credit for our 2nd month's rent... PARTIAL. And I just received my security deposit after having to call them to ask about it. I gave them over 30 days. I actually waited to write this review until we received the deposit back.
Take from this what you will. I've never experienced such incompetence, avoidance, and neglect. I had to pay to move again, I lost a new mattress, and I had to pay to get a large area rug cleaned. Our neighbor also moved out after less than 2 months.
The worst part is, they KNEW ABOUT IT before we moved in.
I lived in Ohio City for almost 20 years, this should not be tolerated there or anywhere.
The ONLY exception was the women in the office. They always seemed to care and really tried to get us some help. It's not their fault. The blame lies solely with the owners.
I hope they read this and do better.
