My mother just moved in and the apartment is infested with bedbugs. They are in the baseboards, on the floor, on brand new bedding, shelves, and rugs. The apartment was supposedly treated twice before she moved in and I was told there were no complaints of bedbugs at the apartment, nor were any seen when they inspected. I just canāt believe that. They are in the baseboards, all on the floor, on my momās shoes, some were found in the kitchen and bathroom. These are big bugs so if you know the lifecycle of these pests, then you would know this just didnāt occur. It has probably been an issue prior to her moving in. Management was informed and while they are apologetic, I feel like they arenāt handling this appropriately. They didnāt inspect the apartment. I was told it doesnāt need to be inspected, that they will go ahead and treat it, and if we continue to see bugs after 2 weeks, then theyāll inspect. When asked if bed bugs were an issue here, I was informed that its community living, in an apartment complex, of course thereās going to be issues. Iāve lived in apartments for 20yrs and not once did I have an infestation of bedbugs. So the apartment will now be treated for the third time.
We were at the apartment when the pest control came. It was one guy, with small bag that had one bottle of chemicals in it and an attached spraying nozzle. I did ask if thatās all they were using for the apartment, he said yes. Now keep in mind this is to treat my motherās apartment and the adjoining apartments next to hers and above and below hers. Doesnāt seem adequate. Thank goodness we only moved a small amount of items in there. At this time, we arenāt moving anything else in this apartment and when she leaves, nothing will be coming with her. I just canāt take that risk.
According to the public health website, the apartment should have been inspected prior to be being treated to determine how severe the infestation is and to determine the best way to treat it. I believe they were aware of this infestation before my mother moved in.
I was informed they do not have to report an infestation to any agencies. Kinda crazy since itās a HUD, low income, senior and disabled housing property.
Residents sit outside and hang out in the parking lot. They smoke. Some will ask you for food or money for cigarettes. They comment on your items you bring in. āOh, look, sheās got coffee.ā Some residents hang out downstairs inside in the common areas. They appear to be mostly people with physical disabilities. So in wheelchairs, with walkers.
I was told this was independent living but there are, very clearly, people that live here that require assistance in order to āmove about independentlyā. Iāve seen home health aids or nurses come and go.
Overall, Iām very disappointed and disgusted. Low income housing doesnāt mean people have to live in squalor or infested apartments.
Unfortunately there donāt appear to be any agencies that inspect or regulate this aspect of government funded housing.
