I Just finished a trip through the Auburn 4WD Off Roading Practice Trail with a group of five friends on adventure bikes, as a warm up for the Rubicon Trail. The A4ORPT is definitely an intermediate/advanced trail.

Although difficult to make it the entire length, the route is very well laid out. There is a small gravel staging area near the beginning next to HWY 49, no restrooms or shade structures but I heard they just received some grant money to add these and other needed improvements. The trail starts out with a lovely seasonal creek crossing, but keep your eyes ahead of you as some of the roughest sections are right at the beginning. If you are looking to make this a multiple day trip, there is an established campground on the North side of the trail about 1/3 of the way through. If you prefer to do more primitive dispersed camping, this can be done on the South side between the trail and Target, or if you make it far enough there is also dispersed camping between the trail and Safeway. If you find this trial is too much for you or your rig, there is a bail-out option on Quartz Drive, where you can easily make your way to a Starbucks latte. There is a spiritual center on the left at about the halfway point, in case you need to have your rig blessed or pray for good fortune on the rest of your journey. The trail splits at about 2/3 of the way through, you’ll want to stay on the gravel path to the left as the right hits a dead end.

When you crest the top of the hill, you are greeted with an amazing view of one of the areas best natural-ish lakes.

By the time you reach the top, the sun is probably setting and you are in the perfect place to view it. Enjoy your victory and the amazing scenery, but don’t take to long, coming back down the trail in the dark is not for the faint of heart.

I heard rumors that the local off-road club is planning to start a yearly jamboree through this trail, but no information has been released yet.

Damage Tally:
- Four flat tires, mostly near the beginning.
- Two bent rims.
- One broken frame.
- Two riders had to call their mommy.

I’ve been on the Rubicon and Fordyce for over 40 years. But recently visiting Target had become a struggle in my 1947 Willys. So I called Trevor at WFO Concepts in Auburn to see what we could do tame the Auburn 4WD Practice trail. WFO recommended a JK, upgrade the axles to Dana 60’s and Nitto 40” tires. So appointments made, upgrades completed and checks written. Now I can easily traverse this road like a pro and Target/Safeway are accessible again.

Found myself on this road in my old LS lexus on sagging suspension in the middle of the night. It turned into quite the adventure! I'm now missing 2 more panels from the bottom of my car, but I didn't get stuck and learned a lot about what car sound like when they're bottoming out, definitely worth trying once.

This is an excellent practice trail for the beginner or experienced off-roader. There are a variety of technical obstacles perfectly placed throughout that are suitable for all vehicle types. Those with low suspension may find it more challenging however. The course changes every winter, emerging with a new set of obstacles. Living off Dry Creek, my wife and I occasionally enjoy this trail on our way to the gym or to grab groceries.

Definitely a fun trip the dips will definitely bottom out a car. But in the truck was so much fun the kids even with seat belts were flying around. Then if your lucky someone will be coming from the other side and you get to dodge the cars while hitting the biggest dips and bumps.

By far the most extreme and difficult trail I’ve ever ran. It makes the con look like a day trip to the local Starbucks

Great trail, had all my Bajas on and lockers on for this one spot that I was caught up on. I had my drone flying over and made sure I capture every overland moment. I even had to pull rope at one part. Intense trail on gawd.

Took the old Nissan down this one the other day. The water in the holes add a new level of difficulty as you can no longer tell the depth. 4 wheel drive recommended most times out the year.
