Typically Long Beach is relatively easy to deal with in terms of pulling a simpler OTC/Express permit. However, their inspection request system is faulty, if the requested date is not available it just clears the form and you can't tell that the inspection request didn't go through until you scroll all the way down the page and there is a notice that says

"If you are redirected to this page after clicking "Submit", the date you have selected is not available. Please select another date and resubmit your request."

However, if you don't scroll all the way down the page you will never see this message. After having problems with the form I called in on a Friday they told me Next available inspection is next Thursday! I asked about Rush inspections and the lady I was speaking to told me that for $200 I can fill out a form for an After hours inspection. I sent someone monday morning to fill out the form and the guy at the counter told us it was $1400. I had them double check since I had just spoken to someone on the phone and they very rudely just said "14!".

I called in and the person who answered immediately copped an attitude and said "Let me clarify this situation, the after hours inspection is $1200 and a minimum of 4 hours" When I asked her to clarify what a Minimum of 4 hours meant she transferred me to an inspector who was out on vacation for the next few days.

The complete lack of empathy and customer service is ridiculous. The people in this office forget that their customers are the citizen of the city and we are just trying to figure out all the different processes and requirements. The attitude, rude delivery and constant misinformation doesn't make it any easier.

ALSO PLEASE FIX YOUR INSPECTION REQUEST FORM ONLINE TO AVOID SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS.

This is the worst city building department ever. The waits are ridiculous. It’s worse the the DMV. They need to get a better system. .

It's decent for a government office. Very difficult to go there with pre-printed checks, always added fees
