I was no longer very happy in post-COVID California after learning what my friends and my employers really thought of me, but it felt like I was stuck. My house was partially owned by the city, and I wasn't able to pay out of pocket for the repairs it needed. Mike wrote to tell me I was actually in a hot neighborhood and that he had a client who'd seen all the things and was I interested in selling someday?
It had never occurred to me that anyone would want to buy my house. It was 1890 on the outside, builder-grade 1992 on the inside, with only one usable story of two. It needed new windows, reworked HVAC, a new bathroom and a roof. At first, I thought he was joking, and I responded in kind. I had to think it over for a month before I decided to see what might happen.
Not only did Mike have a buyer lined up, an offer was made two days later. I never had to show the place or have a sign in the yard. I was able to realize enough profit to become free of consumer debt. I am writing this from my new house in West Virginia, built in the 20th Century with all the things my old house was missing. The appliances even match. : )
I am profoundly grateful to Mike for helping me move someplace more affordable. Except for my mortgage, I am now debt-free, a good spot to be in at my time of life.
